Call for Stronger Animal Protection Laws in Arkansas

To: Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Arkansas State Legislators
Subject: Protect Pets in Arkansas — Enact Laws Like Dexter’s Law and Trooper’s Law
We, the undersigned citizens of Arkansas and advocates for animal welfare, respectfully urge you to pass legislation modeled after Dexter’s Law and Trooper’s Law, which were recently enacted in Florida. These laws represent a crucial step forward in protecting animals from cruelty and ensuring that justice is served for those who abuse them.
Why This Matters:
Far too often, cases of animal cruelty or neglect result in little to no meaningful consequences. Florida has taken action — and Arkansas should follow.
- Dexter’s Law prohibits individuals convicted of animal cruelty from owning or adopting pets in the future.
- Trooper’s Law requires animal abusers to undergo psychological evaluation or treatment as part of sentencing.
These laws are not just punitive; they are preventive. They protect animals, promote public safety, and empower law enforcement to take meaningful action against repeat offenders.
We Call on You to:
- Introduce and pass Arkansas-specific versions of Dexter’s Law and Trooper’s Law
- Prioritize animal welfare legislation in the upcoming legislative session
- Collaborate with local shelters, veterinarians, law enforcement, and advocacy groups to ensure thoughtful and effective implementation
Arkansas must not fall behind in protecting the voiceless.
We believe that animals deserve compassion, safety, and justice — and that our state can lead by example. Please act now to give Arkansas’s animals the legal protections they desperately need.
