  • Dear Northwestern School Board,

In the second paragraph of the current dress code it states that clothing that is not gender appropriate is inappropriate for the school environment and “is not permitted.”

School age years are those of great development both on an academic level and a personal level alike. This language is outdated and it stifles and shames students journey to find themselves and the identity that they feel most comfortable in. In my personal opinion this language is not only inappropriate but also transphobic and has no place in a learning environment. Students are at school to learn and connect not to be policed in their gender identity and expression. School is a place where students should feel held and accepted by the school board and staff alike to ensure they can reach their full potential.

This is a call for the removal of non gender inclusive language within the dress code as well as an public apology for the harm it has perpetuated while in place.

Thank you for your time,
