Call for action regarding proposed homeless camp In Lahaina

Good idea Bad location

My Trust owns three (3) lots in Pu'unoa. A tented homeless camp as you enter Lahaina should have a very negative impact on the area and the economy. We already have a homeless facility in the area.

Please do not endanger the visitors and children who love this island and gladly spend their money here!

Placing a tented homeless camp of 80 plus people adjacent to the entrance of Lahaina, the most important tourist part of Maui, is likely to cause an enormous cost to our economy.

Too fast. Maybe we should set it up next to where the Martins and Welchs live.

This should be a community decision, not a unilateral decision made by a few individuals with personal agendas.

We would like to see the camp site set up in Olowalu were the infrastructure is already established. Why relocate current site?

This project should not be fast tracked! The impacts to our community are to great to prevent debate and comments by all involved!

There are better locations than this for a homeless camp.

Don't just pull the trigger. Plan an get more minds involved to find the best solution.

Research before deciding.....just enables them to think being homeless is ok

Appropriate due diligence and careful consideration must be taken in matters such at these. Putting the public, homeless folks, homeowners, visitors and others at risk by not taking the time to properly plan and appropriate location which is long term and sustainable solution is wasteful of time and resources. Wanting to find a solution to the issue ... I'm all for it but do the right thing and plan this properly. I would be willing to help with the planing process... Just ask me! Rebecca Lauricella

There is a better way to deal with this problem. No tent city in Lahaina.

I am a Puamana owner. I strongly agree with this petition. The proposed location for this campground is completely inappropriate for both the potential inhabitants and the surrounding communities. While it could possibly be unrelated, the result of a Google search of Mr. Martin indicates that this may not be the first time he and/or the foundation has tried this. An article in the Honolulu Advertiser dated September 1, 2008 appears to suggest that Mr. Martin and the Ho’omoana Foundation put forth a similar development to be located near Spreckelsville which also seems to have attracted opposition from the nearby neighborhoods that would have been affected. In addition to signing this petition, I urge everyone to fax or email letters of opposition to the Maui Planning Commission and Elle Cochran before the July 28 hearing date to let them know that this campground does not belong in this location. Please try to attend the meeting on July 28 at 9 am if you are on Maui and able to make it.
