This petition is against the Calgary Board of Education's noon supervision fee of $295.00 dollars. We are told it must be paid for each child while attending Collingwood School. If using the buses or not. This extra fee is for a staff member to be present in the lunch room to supervise children during lunch break. The School hours are from 8:30 am to 3:05 pm and the children remain present on school grounds during their lunch break. The school does not provide any lunch or snack for children, but a packed lunch must be taken from home and eaten on the school premises. The fee of $295.00 per child is an astronomical number for families that are already on a shoe string budget; for CBE to charge the parents supervision fees during any part of the school day is ridiculous and unacceptable; this is a safety issue and should already be covered by CBE to protect our children from harm because our children are to young to fend for them selves. CBE is required by there own guide lines to protect our children during every minute that they are entrusted in the schools care. The parents already payed a fee of $115.00 dollars for other school fees, and on top of that we parents are asked to pay additional moneys for “fun lunch”, if the parent says no to fun lunch it is excluding the child from partaking in this event and makes the child feel left out “ which is wrong”, even if we can not afford it. The school also “sells” popcorn and milk every other Friday and parents are pressured to pay for this service as well so there child is not left out and wondering why. Were not even three months into the new school year and already the fees are approx. $500.00 and keep piling up, one after another. Collingwood is a public School funded by Calgary tax payers hard earned dollars and a separate fee for Noon supervision is completely ridiculous. Our children deserve the right to have constant care and feel safe while attending school and we as parents also need the reinsurance that our children are being cared for during this time; without extra payment. The busing system and noon supervision should not be linked together and weather you are inside the busing zone or not has no relevance over that fact. Our children should be supervised and cared for during there break without any extra fees relating to there situation of residence. If a parent opts out the use for busing then this parent should not have any extra fees. The parents should not be responsible for paying an extra body to watch there child during break or any other staff member working for the Calgary Board of Education. This should already be there responsibility with out the extra fee trying to be collected by CBE.
