To: The Council City of Oshawa, in the Province of Ontario.

 WHEREAS, in light of the vacant seat on Oshawa City Council, we, the undersigned, believe a by-election is the only option that respects the values and principles of the democratic election process;

 WHEREAS, as residents of the City of Oshawa, we are very concerned to hear that our newly elected council is considering an appointment to fill the vacant seat on Oshawa City Council.

 WHEREAS, as Canadians, we feel it is our fundamental democratic right to choose our representatives by way of secret ballot;

 WHEREAS the two other legislative bodies that contain duly-elected representatives from Oshawa (those being the House of Commons and the Ontario Legislature), have always filled, through tradition, law, and respect for democracy, addressed vacancies through by-elections;

 WHEREAS the Durham District School held a by-election in 2006 and several members of the current council did not raise any protest against costs associated with a by-election prior to acquiescing to the DDSB trustees’ request to respect the democratic rights of Oshawa’s voting public;

 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, we are adding our names to the chorus of voices calling for a by-election so the people of Oshawa may elect all eleven of their council representatives.
