Bradley University: Campaign for a carbon-neutral campus
March 30, 2009 Dear President Glasser, Please lend your support and leadership to the long term goal of creating a Bradley University campus that is carbon neutral. The overwhelming scientific evidence of the direct linkage between climate change and increasing greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, presents both a crisis and opportunity for our nation. The long term goal of carbon neutrality is achievable and will challenge Bradley at every level to further academic excellence. Leadership that promotes the combination of academic training across disciplines in sustainability with the actual creation of a living Bradley campus model will receive broad support from the Bradley community. In addition, there are long term economic benefits and cost effective savings. Our campus will join over 600 other colleges and universities who have made similar efforts across America, nearly 25% of the total national student body. This effort is being coordinated by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, ACUPCC, at www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org. There are fourteen other Illinois schools participating in ACUPCC, including Illinois Central College in East Peoria, and the Missouri Valley Conference schools of Drake and Indiana University. Your agreement to involve Bradley in this effort will provide through ACUPCC many technical resources to measurably reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There will also be academic resources to help engage students and faculty in the emerging global generation of energy production and sustainable utilization. Bradley can join leading colleges and universities in combating global climate change, setting an example for the entire region. Your commitment will begin a strategic multi-year process involving the entire Bradley student body, faculty and administration. Everyone on campus will play an important role and participate in helping solve one of the greatest challenges of this generation, climate change. Please consider adding Bradley to the ever-increasing list of higher learning institutions rising to the challenge of solving global climate change. Thank you, The Undersigned
