I recently received a little gift from the universe of an extra $200 in my budget. I was excited because I was going to be able to use this money to spend on myself. Two things on my list were some new underwear (of the shapewear variety) and a cool new pair of high heels in trendy nude tones. So I headed on down to the outlet mall and went into Maidenform. Where I found that shapewear was offered in two colors, black and "flesh" tones. Not my flesh. But I'm used to this so I dithered around trying to decide between two colors that I didn't want or need and left the store without making a purchase. Later I headed over to DSW to find my new Nude pumps. This is such a great look and makes your legs look long and lean. But they had no nude pumps for brown girls. They had forty different brands for white girls. Forty. Yes, I said forty different brands for white girls. I counted them. Not one pair of nude pumps for brown girls. At this point I got very upset. Whether the message was intentional or completely thoughtless it was still clear. YOUR KIND ARE NOT WELCOME HERE. I will point out here that Louboutin made brown flesh tone pumps but A) I can't afford them and B) they are sold out. (i.e. brown girls are not only buying them they are shelling out $675 a pair) So I just want to let the powers that be at Maidenform and DSW know that brown girls get nude too. We have brown skin and we want brown nude shapewear and brown nude shoes. The time is now.
