The local planning office confirmed our permit to paint the Nexus Art Cafe front today. I am currently coordinating with our design team to begin the exterior work next week. We successfully secured the necessary approvals to move forward with this project.

Please take just a minute and have a little scan of this: This petition is of utmost importance to the customers, staff and community surrounding Nexus Art Cafe and the Northern Quarter in Manchester. To cut a long story short all we want is the permission from the powers that be to be able to paint the boring grey front of our cafe in a design which reflects our personality, ethics and vibe. As Nexus is a not-for-profit organisation and is a part of central buildings and the methodist church, and also part of a conservation area, this is proving to be a difficult feat to achieve. The whole point of Nexus Art Cafe even existing is to be a hub of creativity, community and spirituality (as well as serving truly awesome pies) and if we let our creative and community projects be trodden down by others, well, then we just wouldn't be a very good Nexus Art Cafe would we? It would all be rather rubbish. Nexus was started around 2 years ago by a lovely chap called Cris, and over that time it has transformed from being a spare empty basement of an old building with two staff members scurrying away to having a whole bunch of lovely staff members, a beautiful functioning cafe space, exhibition space, gig venue, art studio, volunteer hub and community center. All of this has been through the elbow grease of our staff and volunteers and just generally you guys who love the space. The only things thats holding us back from expanding even further (oh yes, there are plenty more plans) is our extremely boring and dull cafe front. Its just, well, GREY. If you haven't seen it, heres what it looks like right now:

And here is our design for a more vibrant and exciting cafe front!:

This design was made by volunteers and artists from OUR community who share our love for tea, art, and music and also value our ideals of community. This is why its important that after being told 'No' we can all come together as a community and make this happen. Isn't it silly that we have to go through three (or more) levels of higher powers to get a lick of paint on our walls? Signing this petition really means SO MUCH to us. From Sally & Team Nexus

Updates

March 10, 2010

I have submitted a formal request for a meeting with the planning department to discuss the specific conservation guidelines affecting our frontage. We are currently compiling a portfolio of visual mockups to demonstrate how the proposed design retains the architectural integrity of the building. Please watch for an update following our initial consultation with the council representatives.

The momentum generated by this petition has prompted a formal request for a meeting with the local planning department. I am now drafting the supporting documentation to present our case for the cafe facade at our upcoming consultation.

The cafe is such a bright spot in the NQ. Keeping it grey is just silly when the whole area is meant to be about art and creativity!

Nexus is amazing, let them have some colour already! Manchester needs more life not more grey concrete blocks.

Get it painted! The front looks so dull right now and does not fit the vibe of the place at all.
