After having been off the air for 5 years now, Smallville definitely helped pave the way for the current superhero shows doing really well (The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, etc).

Smallville, having been around since 2001 has garnered a huge audience who followed Clark Kent's story to becoming Superman, but it left people wanting more. The great mixture of drama, action and a bit of comedy, combined with superbly cast characters made for an unforgettable adventure that pushed what kind of VFX you could have in a TV show. Fast forward to present day 2016, and now we have a superhero show on almost every weekday night, and ones that come out in entire seasons (Daredevil, Jessica Jones) and it looks like there is no stopping them from coming out, which is why it makes sense to bring Smallville back.

I'm not saying it should come back as Smallville, but a sequel that makes sense would be having it become 'Metropolis' since that is where most of the action seems to happen. Smallville was about following Clarks journey as he learned about his power, who he was and what it meant to become a hero, but in Metropolis he knows his powers and is a hero, which is why a change in the mood of the show would be fitting. I'm not trying to write it here, but just give an idea of how we can return to one of our favorite shows without losing what made it so great.

A petition is a great way of showing networks there is still interest in this show, and that there are still fans around who would be more than happy to see this brought to life. Netflix are a company that actually pay attention to these sort of things, so if this can gather enough attention it could potentially be put forward to them and then something could happen, or The CW could look into bringing this back.
