As many of you have noticed, the school lost a very important staff member last week. Mrs. Danese, who has been with the school for over 15 years, was removed by Superintendent Vitti of Duval County Schools and reassigned to a middle school. Superintendent Vitti feels elementary schools do not need this position as student on student violence is less prevalent in elementary schools. Tragedies such as Sandy Hook Elementary as well as more recent incidents of shooting show a real threat from outside sources and a need for security personnel.
As a concerned parent body we feel that he made a move without assessing what is best for our students. We are a predominately military dependent school and our students already face a unique set of situations in regards to family setting and frequent moves. Mrs. Danese provided a watchful eye,and a safe and stable environment. In addition to fulfilling her security duties she was a smiling face in the morning when 4th and 5th graders went to the media center before class. She was the lunch lead and kept order in the cafeteria. She helped organize the media center and run our school book fair. Most importantly she was family to staff and students for years. Help us by signing this petition that we will be submitting to Superintendent Vitti, letting him know we don't agree with his choice to remove our security guard. Our student's safety within our Finegan Family, of which Mrs. Danese played an integral role, is of utmost importance to us. Please bring Mrs. Danese back to Joseph Finegan Elementary.

Superintendent Vitti continues to ignore our messages while he gambles with our children's safety. He thinks he can hide behind his desk and wait for us to disappear but he is wrong. We are preparing to take our frustration directly to the next board meeting to demand answers for this reckless decision.

Superintendent Vitti is clearly feeling the heat because this momentum has become impossible for him to ignore. We are exposing his reckless disregard for our children and his pathetic excuses for stripping our school of basic safety.

Mrs Danese was more than a security guard. When the decision came to cut her position at Finnegan you did more than delete a job position. I have known her 3 years and worked beside her for 2 of them She went above and beyond any security duties outlined in a "security guard" position. She was a mentor, a substitute,a front desk clerk, an assistant to all the teachers, helped in the clinic, filled in when ever and where ever she was needed, and alot of children confided in her and found comfort in her daily hugs when they are having a bad day. This decision to cut her position has been very detrimental to the whole Finnegan family!
MS Denise does so many jobs at Finnigan that need doing and that support education at that school. What she provides is far and above what she is paid to do because she loves her school and her kids. Finnigans children need her, whe, a parent is deployed she fills a stability need for them, she is there before and after school, during lunch, in the hall, every year. That means a lot to kids that have to deal with change and uncertainties. Please return her to the kids.
I have been a teacher at Finegan for 22 years. During that time, Josephine Danese has proven herself to be one of, if not THE, most important staff member! I arrive at school by 6:45 every morning and she was always already there. She has poured her heart and soul into the safety and well being of each and every student at Finegan Elementary School. If the best interest of all students is honestly what is the most important, then Josephine Danese should come back to Finegan.
Before I retired last year, I had the honor to work with Ms. Danese for over 14 years. She is such an integral part of Finegan's warm, loving atmosphere. Her daily attention to the students' welfare and needs are directly responsible for PREVENTING safety issues! To be the most effective, Safety officers must work twice as hard at sensing and preventing violence, not just dealing with problems as they occur! She always arrived at school way before the students, checked the grounds for safety and was often still at the school long after the students were gone. PLEASE return her to Finegan!!! Her salary is money WELL SPENT by the district in preventing problems, before they are even "born"!
Mrs. Danese is stability in a school for military children. These children face many hardships as their parents protect our freedoms. Please reconsider her placement as she is a vital part of Finegan.
Ms. Donlyn! I didn't think bump into you again! I changed my profile pic here so hopefully you'll remember me if you ever get this. I was in your class of...oh, let's see...2006 was it? more than ten years ago! I was the little kid always too scared of the fire alarm to use the bathroom :P
Please bring back her back! She played a vital role in my children's safety.

Mrs. Danese also participates in school wide activities during off hours when we would not be provided a security presence. She has shifted from one area of responsibility to another over the years to remain a part of the Finegan Family serving our special population with a wide variety of needs.
