The current K12 curriculum is not adequately preparing students for the world they will encounter.
Ninety-percent of the world’s data have been created in the last two years. This new, data-intensive world can be difficult to navigate, and few of us have the skills to do so.
The K12 education system has been slow to recognize the changes this data explosion has made to society, leaving our kids unprepared for this new reality.

I work in business intelligence and analytics and we have a severe shortage of skilled data staff. And, I find that I also do not have the necessary data literacy skills to adequately navigate the business. It was limited my career advancement.
Logarithms? Conics? Rationalizing expressions? I love all these topics myself but WHY does a student need to learn this to go to college?? Data Science should be an equal option to Algebra II as a college requirement! Best idea in education in decades!
I loved math in school and have a master's in chemical engineering from MIT. What I use everday are the data literacy skills I built in college. Much of it could have been taught to everyone at my high school, not just the privileged kids like me.
I am a math teacher and I desperately see a need for more relevant training when it comes to data. We are sending students into the world knowing how to rationalize denominators but not to be able to interpret complex data or to use data to support an argument.
I am a math teacher and am constantly frustrated with the resources available. Many are not applicable to the real world and do not teach students how to problem solve and think, rather just follow an algorithm. We already have computers. We need thinkers.
Hope we can get this initiative moving. Your case on the podcast makes great sense.
We need 21st century skills in 2021…and we are already 21-years late!

Wow, this is SO important. I work in Cybersecurity for a Fortune 200 bank, and the previous math curriculum is woefully off target. Statistics should be front and center, not secondary, and should be fully integrated with software tooling like Excel.
