Not being able to code in the future will be the same as being illiterate today, the ability to write an Excel macro or a simple SQL query is very important.

Is it really that hard to show some of the basics of coding to kids? Start with 2 or 3 lessons per week and if they like it, let them do some more. We really need much more computer specialists in Australia. I think this might be the most lazy country on Earth and stupid people running it don't help make smarter future generations.

As a computer science student at UNSW I can definitively state that coding is not about just about getting a job, it's a mind set towards problem solving and critical thinking and children need to be introduced to it at an early stage of life. It is an invaluable tool in my life and is just as important as mathematics.

I'm going to be a teacher, I'll have my primary kids coding websites for a nice introduction to coding.

Coding should at the bare minimum be an optional lunch time activity for kids who are interested. Get coding into schools in whatever way you can!

I believe it's important kids learn about the power of computing and go through the first experience of having made a computer do something, rather than passively use laptops and tablets.

Coding will be integral for our future so we need to get kids interested in it as soon as possible.

This would be great to see. I first saw proper code in Year 11 and still chose to study it in Uni, and I'd even go and get a teaching degree to be able to teach these children.

The fact that the prime minister and the liberal party seems to ignore the fact that the technology sector is the fastest growing job and business markets GLOBALLY, and that there is a severe shortage of those technically trained to fill those positions, simply astounds me.
Cultivating an interest in fields starts at an early age.
I myself am a programmer, and I was on and around computers from the time I was born. It was thanks to my parents (who were technology literate) who got me on the home PC learning my way around it, and eventually figuring out how to 'mod' games and such that it went from a hobby to a career, and I am where I currently am today.
Kids NEED to know how to code.
The world economy REQUIRES that they do.
If they do not, we're going to be in a lot of trouble a few years down the line.

I hope the Liberal party reconsiders. This is a critical thing to approach at a young age - learning to code is like learning a language (albeit a little easier). IT is the future and we really need to equip our kids with the skills they need to survive - if they're interested of course.
Get coding in yr5&6
Teach coding in grammer school NOW!
