There is a proposal to eliminate zero period in the upcoming 2025-2026 school year at Mira Costa High School. Zero period is being limited to 2 zero periods per department at Mira Costa. Many departments, due to fairness, are choosing not to have any zero periods at all. This is detrimental to students' schedules, especially those who are student-athletes. Most practices for school sports occur during sixth period. Therefore, students have been taking zero periods for years to try to take all of the classes that they wish to take, while also fulfilling the basic academic requirements. This proposal takes this opportunity away from students, causing lots of tension, and possibly putting electives and foreign language class credits at risk. Students and parents of students at Mira Costa can help this issue by signing this petition to try to stop this decision from taking place and save the students at mira costa from haveing a jeprodized schedule.

I feel that a change this drastic needs to be grandfathered in or given with much more notice and with solutions offered, not just a sudden cancellation of zero period classes. Our students already mapped out their senior year, and that poses a huge threat to their future!
I want zero period. I take biotech right now and love the class. I would not have time in my schedule to take it during another time.
I was a zero period student athlete 20 years ago. Zero period is critical to student athlete success. It must stay.
As a student athlete myself in high school zero period allowed me to be both an athlete and a honor student. The time is needed in the afternoons to study after sports practice.
For students with a 6th period sport, it can be challenging to meet the expectations of high caliber colleges without having six academic periods a year. Students at Mira Costa are ambitious and it seems a shame to limit them by cutting back on zero period class offerings.

Zero period helps students especially student athletes who put “student” first accomplish what they need and take classes they want. Without it, Mira Costa kids will be at a disadvantage. Like all things, I imagine this comes down to money. This is a mission critical part of high school and other cuts should be made in order to keep this.
