Please don't sack your eminent staff on the basis of Twitter vitriol. This line appears to me to be an ill-judged little joke. If Sir Tim has supported women in science in the rest of his career, then defend him in public, don't crucify him. (I am a woman, an academic and a feminist).

I hated what he said, but I hate this rush to judgment even more and I am puzzled by how quickly it all happened with these institutions, seemingly with no cooling off period, or time for sober reflection.

The level of intolerance shown by UCL is almost equal to that of North Korea or Iran. I know what he is may be viewed by some as sexist but the man is simply speaking from experience. Since he has apologised, I think the matter should just die there. To sacrifice on of the best scientists in the world in order to appease so feminazi terrorists is horrible. You can't judge a man who has been making great contribution to science for decades over a joke he told badly. Don't throw a wonderful baby away with the bath water.

UCL were certainly in the wrong here, but it is hard to fight against all of social media baying for blood, This kind of thing seems depressingly common (cf Jon Ronson http://bit.ly/18Rgd2K), which is why we need petitions like this. Crowds are idiots.

This should have never happened to this man based on the comment he made. I am a woman and I believe this is political correctness at its worst! I believe his comment was meant to be humorous but missed the mark. Reinstate this man and give him the apology he deserves!

Nobel Laureate, who at 72 is still working, still contributing to society, a Nobel laureate no less. What he said was flippant and ill advised, but I am certain was said with no malice, if there was any real evidence of misogyny or sexism, I would not sign petition
