Erasing her name is like erasing history.

Illustrators get little enough recognition as it is, bringing back the Greenaway name would at least be a sign that this award truly values them.

Recognizing Kate Greenaway and retaining the link with the award's origin is important. Also, as a consumer, I recognise the Kate Greenaway Medal and use it to guide my buying choices. That is not the case with the renamed medal.

I had been very disappointed to hear that this prestigious award supporting the great work of book illustrators which adds so much to our strong heritage of marvellous children's literature had chosen to remove Kate Greenaway's name. And I am pleased to support the campaign for reinstatement of her name which means so much. Whilst appreciating that financial support must be sought and gratitude acknowledged; whatever has happened to the true gift of philanthropic donation celebrating this institution as it stands including in its illustrious name?

Kate Greenaway for illustration should be restored for the medal

The erasure of the name of Kate Greenaway from the illustration Award in her name is typical of the erasure and silencing of women’s talents and voices. For this to be happening within the arts in 2023 is abhorrent. The arts should promote individuality, diversity and be a beacon of light. The removal of Kate Greenaway name has extinguished one light. Let’s reinstate her name - and show that the underrepresented will have their voices heard from the past and present to ensure the arts can impact humanity in the future.

Kate Greenaway is a significant illustrator and her work is very important in the field of children’s literature. The prize for illustration should reflect her legacy and should be restored.

This is an absolute disgrace and very disappointing the CILIP has made this decision. It is wholly inappropriate and completely out of step with how members and wider society feel. I’m disgusted.

Please change this back, the legacy of Greenaway is so important to preserve and share with women and men today and in the future I run the Jonny Valentine youtube channel telling the history of nursery rhymes. The work of Greenaway and others inspires my work.

I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in this petition and am disappointed that the name of Kate Greenaway was removed to satisfy corporate and marketing objectives.

Kate Greenaway's name is synonymous with this Illustration Award. Pictures matter. Illustrations matter. The names of illustrators are important. #PicturesMeanBusiness

Do not obliterate the name of a beloved female illustrator for a financial obligation, replacing it with a male name!

I can’t understand why a sponsor would want to be involved in deleting the name of a prominent woman illustrator from such an award. A horrible look for the sponsor and decision makers.

Please do not ignore the importance of such an influential woman artist. Her name, Kate Greenaway, should not be discarded thoughtlessly, to be replaced by an irrelevant male industrialist.
