Band directors cannot direct orchestras and know the string instruments.

As an alumn of RMS 2008 and BHS 2012 strings, as well as going on in college with the orchestra program, it was absolutely essential to have a teacher who is an expert in the string department. I don’t know if I would have gone on playing years later had I not had the string expert if a teacher. Some of my best memories at RMS and BHS have been with the music department due to the extreme knowledge of the teachers, particularly the string teachers. I don’t personally know Mr. Griffith, but I’ve heard students in the EYSO talk of nothing but praise about him. If RMS decides to go on with this, they will do a disservice to many students.

Although i only had mr. Griffith for a year, i enjoyed that class a lot more than many others. He has such a passion for teaching orchestra and the school’s decision to “relieve” is completely unfounded. The orchestra program in Batavia is already understaffed, with 3 teachers for 8 schools. With this current distribution im sure all of the Orchestra directors are stressed snough with having to coordinate 3 or more grades each. I also have personally experienced the horrors of having a band director teach an orchestra. The skill sets do not transfer over because string instruments are completely different from wind. A band director would also not be able to give specific instructions tailored for strings, their lack of understanding of the instrument may cause lasting problems (and loss of money for students’ families), and each student will progress at a slower rate because the director doesn’t know the nuances of the instruments. Batavia is making another huge mistake, letting go a passionate orchestra director, and I sincerely hope they realize what kind of decision they are making.

Since all children at RMS do not have the luxury of private orchestra lessons, they depend on the excellence of the instruction at school. Without the exceptional and zealous instruction of Mr. Griffith, these young musicians will surely suffer.

This is not fair at all. Mr Griffith is an amazing, passionate, and inspiring teacher. Whenever I'm feeling down, I always feel better when I come to Orchestra. He cares about all his students like their his own kids. A band teacher may be able to conduct and read music, but they don't have the experience and dedication to orchestra like Mr. Griffith.

Literally everyone was in tears today in Orchestra. The district is making a HUGE mistake. He deserves to keep his job. We love you Mr. G!

In my personal opinion, Mr. G puts everything out of his way to make us kids happy. He knows how to make us enjoy class even if it is a bad day. I’ve had many improval these last 4 years with Mr G. and I can’t tell him how much I appreciate him. Even they tough times, he knew how to stick thru it.

I am not in orchestra but he does not deserve to be fired he is a great teacher to everyone in orchestra and to people who aren't but he needs to stay at RMS because we need him to teach the kids orchestra and it will be wierd for a band teacher to teach orchestra.

Music education is crucial to educating the whole child! It has been exciting to see the growth of the Batavia orchestra program in recent years. This needs to continue with teachers who are dedicated to this program!

Sis, why would you even get rid of the cello teacher!? He is obviously more advanced and what are kids learning if you’re hiring somebody that barely knows anything about it?!

I bet no sports program will ever suffer from cutbacks. However, how many professional athletes do you think will come from Batavia? And, many athletes are "washed up" by their 30's. Music is something you can continue for the rest of your life. And, there are numerous studies on how it helps improves cognitive skills. On the flip side, think about how many sports cause concussions and damage the brain. I am not saying eliminate sports, they have benefits as well. But, as an educational system, put your priorities in order. Eliminating music teachers is not beneficial.

He was my orchestra director in elementry school, and he convinced me to keep doing violin, which has helped me get through some pretty dark times. If he is rehired, he could also help others just like me and make them feel welcome no matter what
