Petition to Reinstate Summer School at the University of Namibia

We, the undersigned students of the University of Namibia (UNAM), urgently call on the administration to reinstate the summer school program for all students. This is a critical need that affects our academic futures and financial stability.

(We do not seek to remove the first and second opportunity exams; we simply wish to add summer school as an additional, non-disruptive option.)

The phase-out of many courses under the old curriculum is leaving students with fewer opportunities to complete their degrees. Without the option of summer school, many of us risk having to restart our degrees, a burden we cannot bear financially. In a developing country like Namibia, the financial strain of repeating a degree is untenable for many students and their families. This situation not only threatens our academic progress but also our future contributions to the nation's development.

Reinstating summer school offers a practical and essential solution:

1. Opportunity to Pass: It provides one more chance for students to pass their remaining courses without the financial and academic setback of starting over.

2. Financial Feasibility: A payment structure or fees can be designed to cover the cost of offering these classes during the December period, ensuring the program is financially viable for the university.

3. Support for Developing Namibia: Offering such opportunities is crucial for the development of our nation. Higher education is a pathway to progress, and accessible education options support the growth of skilled professionals necessary for national development.

Impact on Freshmen and Underclassmen:

- Freshmen at Risk: First-year students, often unaware of the full academic demands, face the risk of failing courses and losing financial support from NSFAF. This not only jeopardizes their academic future but also adds to the population of debt holders, as they must redo the year without financial assistance. The broader student body, including underclassmen, also faces significant setbacks without the flexibility and additional opportunities that summer school provides. This situation exacerbates financial and academic stress, hindering our ability to succeed and contribute to Namibia's development.

Statistical Context:

- General Trends: It is well-documented that a significant percentage of students in higher education institutions face academic challenges that can lead to course failures. At UNAM, the absence of summer school exacerbates these challenges, potentially affecting a substantial portion of the student body. The cumulative effect on students and their families is profound, with increased financial burdens and delayed academic progress. Reinstating summer school can mitigate these risks by providing an additional opportunity for academic success.

Comparative Analysis:

- Universities with Summer School: Institutions like the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, and the University of the Witwatersrand offer summer terms that allow students to retake courses and complete their degrees without delay. These universities consistently rank among the top in Africa, partly due to their flexible academic programs that support student success.

- UNAM's Potential: By reinstating summer school, UNAM can enhance its academic reputation and improve its ranking among African universities. Providing additional opportunities for students to succeed will not only benefit the student body but also elevate the university's standing and attract more prospective students.

The World with and without Summer School:

- With Summer School: Students have the opportunity to catch up on failed courses, reducing the financial and academic burden. This leads to higher graduation rates, a more skilled workforce, and a stronger national development trajectory.

-Without Summer School: Students face the risk of repeating entire academic years, leading to increased financial strain, higher dropout rates, and a negative impact on the nation's development due to a less educated workforce.

By reinstating summer school, UNAM will be making a crucial investment in the future of its students and, by extension, the future of Namibia. We implore the university administration to consider this vital request with the utmost seriousness and urgency. We are on our knees, pleading for this opportunity to succeed academically and contribute positively to our nation's development. This is not just a request; it is a desperate plea for the future of countless students and the prosperity of our country.
