We, the undersigned, respectfully express concern with the decision to eliminate a recess in the lower grade levels at Kennerly Elementary School. Although less recess increases time for instruction, we believe the new policy is more detrimental than beneficial. Recent research from the American Academy of Pediatrics demonstrates free play is crucial not only to students’ physical health, but also to students’ learning, emotional health, and social well-being (Ginsburg, 2007). We strongly feel returning to two recess periods will lead to a better learning environment and overall educational experience for our children. We very much appreciate the administration's service to Kennerly students and ask that you reconsider the decision to reduce recess frequency in the lower grade levels.
