We, the undersigned students, faculty, and staff of the University of Arizona demand that the UAlert system be brought back to the purpose of the alert system, and that the students, faculty, and staff are informed of all dangerous activity that may affect the UA community as well as the UA campus.

The UAlert system is defined as being activated “in cases of violent activity, including: active shooter, immediate threat to the UA community, including off-campus events...any unforeseen emergency or situation that dictates the issuance of an alert” (http://cert.arizona.edu/ualert/faq).

As noted in more detail in this article, the following is a non-exhaustive list of incidents which were unreported by UAlert:

  • On August 31st, two girls were robbed at gunpoint just off campus.
  • On October 30th, a girl was held at knifepoint and sexually assaulted on campus.
  • On February 5th, another girl was sexually assaulted walking by the Park Student Union early in the morning.
  • On February 23rd, an active shooting occurred one block off of campus.

We will not accept a false sense of security that you have created for students. We believe our safety and security is more important than the false and misleading image of the University as a safe environment that is currently being put forth.
