The introduction of e-logbooks has been a highly contentious issue since we were first briefed about them.
The main problems we feel that we may encounter are as follows:
Not everybody having access to a device capable of running the software.
Battery life being poor on some devices, meaning that it may not be possible to fill in the logbook after the battery has depleted during the day.
Clinicians needing to sign the logbook using the medical students device - this will surely make it more difficult to gain those already elusive signatures (particularly for some of those technophobic consultants!)
All in all an electronic logbook sounds like a good idea that is moving with the times, but the practicalities outweigh the benefits, and so paper logbooks will still be more desirable.
