SHE is the victim, not the student. I suppose if the student had raped her, the school board would have faulted her in that case as well.

The student responsible needs to be expelled and face criminal charges.
The teacher needs to be reinstated.

This is absolutely disgraceful that this woman lost her job. She did nothing illegal or inappropriate, however both the student and the school did. It is against the law to steal and distribute private photos. Why is the teacher blamed for someone else's criminal acts?
A 16 year old student should know right from wrong. I hope the student is disciplined accordingly and the teacher is given compensation for her troubles.

There's just so much wrong in this situation. Firstly, you're shaming the teacher for doing nothing wrong. You're basically saying that if someone leaves their house unlocked it's ok for another person to go in and do what they want. You're teaching the students involved that it's ok to invade other people's privacy by not making them face consequences to their actions. You're allowing future sex offenders to think what they're doing is ok because they didn't get punished. If they took a fellow female student's phone and did the same stuff they would have to register as sex offenders. As a school you are contibuting to rape culture by blaming the victim and letting the perpetrators go unpunished.

100% of the fault lies with the student, who violated the privacy of Mrs. Arthur.
Hold the student accountable for his actions.

The student should absolutely be reprimanded for this horrible invasion of privacy. This is not the fault of the teacher. The student should NOT have touched her phone. Her phone and the contents inside of it are private, personal property.

The student is completely at fault and should be punished. The moment he picked up her phone he invaded her privacy. The teacher should be rehired.

This is borderline offensive, the teacher should be reinstated and the kid involved should have charges filed on him.

The courts have been very clear that taking personal photographs and sharing them is a blatant violation of privacy. The excuse used that the teacher did not have a lock on the phone and thus made the photos available is contrary to existing Federal case law on hacking, and also a blatant cade of victim shaming. As a school board, you are in a unique position to show the children under your care how to properly behave regarding privacy and responsibilities, and should take this opportunity to show them how to gracefully acknowledge a mistake and make it right.

You're really going to fire someone because they are a victim of personal digital data theft? That's like fining someone because they left their car unlocked and got their stuff stolen. Is the stuff stolen already not a good enough consequence for you?

If you're not going to teach students accountability for THEIR actions then you should not be leading a school. The teacher is not to blame for juvenile activity, the parents are.
