  • On December 11, 2020, the Hull High School community was made aware that the Hull Board of Health and the Superintendent of Schools have cancelled all winter athletics for the 2020-2021 school year. We have been told this is because of a recent rise in cases and safety concerns due to COVID-19. As students in this community, we are told that we are able to enter school with about 100-150 kids with the safest protocols. Throughout the state, Hull included, youth sports and AAU continue to take place. Many students and teachers participate in these events, and then are able to come to school. Teachers, some that could be high risk, have children who play sports every weekend at many different venues. These same teachers are able to come to school. With less than 4 total positive cases within the students so far this year, it's fair to say we have taken every precaution necessary compared to many schools in the South Shore. I, Ben Olivieri, Class President of the Senior Class at Hull High School, have recently concluded a successful fall hockey season with students from Norwell. There was not a single positive case, nor was there any exposure of COVID-19 to the team. Both the boys soccer and girls soccer teams completed successful seasons without a single positive case, and both teams making it very far in the tournament. The Hull Youth Flag Football Program just concluded a successful season, with not a single case of COVID-19, and they were allowed to have any amount of fans. Many people depend on this season to get recruited for scholarships for college. Hull, being the smallest town in the South Shore, is the only town with a cancellation so far. What makes us different from schools with 500+ plus students? As of December 12, 2020, the Hull Youth Basketball Program began tryouts. There is no reason why younger kids, who have very little sense of taking precautions due to this disease, are allowed to play, but the Varsity programs cannot. For the high school hockey players in Hull, with there being less than 10 players in the entire school, combine with Cohasset. Taking away this opportunity from just a few people does not make any difference with fighting this disease. If we can't have sports, how are we able to go to school? The student athletes are exposed to far more people at school than at sporting events, especially since they aren't allowing spectators at these games. This is a decision that must be reversed. This decision will have a negative impact on the students and families of the Hull Community that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Please align this petition supporting the student -athletes of Hull High School.
