Bring Back Home Economics!
More often than not, our seniors are graduating with no knowledge of basic life/home building skills such as:
- Filing taxes (Fed, TR)/balancing a checkbook
- Applying for a mortgage/renting a home
- Buying/leasing a car
- Credit v. Debit
- Mending clothes
- Repairing household items/utilities (plumbing)
These are only some; the rest are just as important. Considering the fact that a good amount of these skills could easily be Googled or looked up on YouTube, I plea we don't use the internet as an excuse to neglect our future adults a hands-on education, one they deserve as soon as possible. While some teenagers don't have daily access to the internet, a majority of them lack motivation to learn or don't receive the education at home. Having said some teenagers disdain basic life skills, not only do I propose making this a course for our high school seniors, this course should be mandatory and a semester-long. Much like Government, Economics, and Health (also usually a semester course) Home EC reserves the right to be taught as a mandatory course to every student prior to receiving their diploma. Along with the NASDAQ and DOW J, Congress and nationwide debt, the difference between syphilis and gonorrhea, our seniors are entitled to knowing how to remain as debt free as possible and making beneficial, affordable choices with their income. Unlike the class offered to American women in the 20th century, this class will focus less on preparing on cooking and child development (as culinary and health already exist) and more on personal finance and survival.
