Figures teach you more about your body and help with control, such a shame they got rid of the eliment the "Figure Skating" was named after.

Nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. I totally understand from a business perspective why figures are not worthy of a television audience, but fundamentally I think the quiet control of figures led to better freestyle skating. It's impressive that elite skater can do quads and triples nowadays, but when I find myselff looking at skating videos of whom to emulate .. I look back to the late 60's and 70's and find their program and choreography much more enjoyable to watch. You rarely see a program any more without botched landings or falls and some of the spins nowadays offer some new variety, but they don't look nice on the ice and they are ruining the bodies of these skaters. Sorry, just my humble opinion. I think moves are great - but I think we should put the figures back in figure skating.

I believe that the art of the figure has been lost in an attempt to streamline and "move" forward or advance skaters more quickly. Precision, attention to detail and discipline are skills required to excel in all areas of life and more and more sports where exacting practice and discipline are key, seem to be dumbing down what was once considered standard practice. A huge loss!

How can they call it figure skating without actually doing the figures section? It is making to easy for the skaters, who are now competing, although it will save money from not having to have 2 pairs of boots.

Learning figures just makes everything else easier! There is no comparison between the quality of skating of those who learned them and those who did not.

TEACHING SKATING IS LIKE TRYING TO TEACH HIGHER MATH, ASTRONOMY, PHYSICS, ETC WITHOUT BASIC MATH SKILLS. MOVES DO NOT!!!!! CUT IT!!!

I would love to see them come back, maybe the quality of the edges would improve.

School figures are the very foundation of figure skating and should be re-instated. How else can you teach the correct body position for beautiful sustained edges? Not with Moves!!!

Having had two of my children sustain overuse injuries, I was, and am today, a strong advocate for the use of figures as a training aid. I believe that the muscle control and strength that cleanly-executed figures provide can help prevent needless injuries.

Figures are the sports history and founding basics. They are the quickest and best way to help skaters understand how their skate works and how to control their body. Practicing figures promotes learning about edges, flow, balance and control, and trains the whole body. Figures help skaters to understand basic bio-mechanical, geometrical and mathmatical principles, exploring and controlling movement over the ice. Practicing figures encourages discipline and is challenging on a personal improvement and competitive level. Figures promote concentration levels and other neurological and physical skills in a peaceful and harmonious environment. In short - I love them ! and want others to gain from the joy that is FIGURE skating.

Figure skating has lost so much because we do not teach them the basics. New skaters cannot hold an edge, let alone know which edge they are skating on. They don't understand the difference between 3 Turns, Brackets, Counters and Rockers, and trying to teach them loops is a joke! Even the coaches who could teach their students basic figure moves can't because there is no space on a freestyle nor is there time because parents don't see the value in it. If skaters HAD to spend at least two sessions a week on clean figure ice, rinks would make more money, coaches would make more money and we would produce better quality skaters who probably wouldn't have as many injuries either because both their bodies and brains would be warmed up and awake!
