Brenton On Sea _ Do we need a liquor store?

Brenton On Sea is a peaceful, residential seaside village forming part of Knysna in the Western Cape. It is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, natural beauty, and the pride residents take in preserving its tranquil character.
Recently, a liquor license was granted for a business located within our small community. While we acknowledge that this license was awarded through all required due process, some residents—myself included—hold personal concerns about the potential impact of such a license in this specific location.
My sentiments are not directed at any individual or business, but rather at the broader implications of introducing retail liquor sales in a community not previously exposed to this kind of establishment. I believe there may be unintended consequences affecting our safety, environment, and the values we strive to maintain. These concerns include increased traffic, waste, potential disturbances, and the effect on property value and lifestyle quality.
Brenton On Sea has, until now, remained untouched by high-footfall commercial outlets. Based on our unique setting and way of life, I believe there may not be a strong community need for a liquor store within the residential zone. While we support entrepreneurship and legal enterprise, we also hope for developments that reflect and protect the spirit of this area.
We therefore respectfully request that the Western Cape Liquor Authority and relevant municipal stakeholders reconsider the long-term suitability of this license within our community. This petition is an expression of our collective sentiment, submitted with the utmost respect for all parties involved.
