The Ten Steps To Successful Breastfeeding The BFHI promotes, protects, and supports breastfeeding through The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding for Hospitals, as outlined by UNICEF/WHO. The steps for the United States are: 1 - Maintain a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff. 2 - Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy. 3 - Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. 4 - Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth. 5 - Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their infants. 6 - Give infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically indicated. 7 - Practice

I have been reading the stories some of you are sharing in the comments and it reminds me exactly why I started this struggle after my own difficult experience in the maternity ward. The lack of proper support for new mothers in our borough is draining. I am currently working on a proposal to present to the local hospital administration to ensure they finally commit to these ten steps.

Seeing this community rally around better hospital standards brings back the frustration I felt when my own baby did not get the support we needed. It is heartening to see so many people agree that families here deserve better care.

YES! So tired of the pressure to use formula when I wanted to breastfeed. Support the moms!!!!

Every hospital in NYC needs to be on board with this. It makes such a huge difference for new moms trying to figure things out.
