We, the undersigned, believe "breast is best" when it comes to feeding infants up to 6 months of age. The Canadian Paediatric Society agrees by recommending “...exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life for healthy, term infants. Breast milk is the optimal food for infants...” We believe Royal Victoria Hospital's (RVH) cutting of the lactation support services was short sighted as international studies have determined a “...significant association between lack of breastfeeding and higher use and cost of health care . . .” We are petitioning RVH to re-establish the lactation support services in the maternity ward.
Seeing 500 signatures on this page reminds me of the nights I spent struggling with nursing while wishing I had someone to turn to at the hospital. This shows me that so many other families feel abandoned by these cuts and are ready to push for the care we all deserve.

Watching the signature count climb reminds me of the nights I spent struggling with nursing alone in my hospital room. If we can reach five hundred names by this evening, we will have the leverage needed to finally force a meeting with the hospital board.

I remember the exhaustion of those early weeks and how desperate I felt for a little bit of guidance. We are nearly at one hundred signatures and I need you to help me push over that line today so the hospital finally acknowledges our struggle.

I think that this service is vital for new mum's. After the overwhelming experience of your first birth there is nothing more difficult then a baby who has difficulty latching, or a mum who feels completely useless and out of her element. I know I could have used one for my first baby.

Cutting costs now, creates higher costs for health care in the future. Research proves that breast feeding provides long term health benefits. Help for moms is needed to establish a good latch so they can continue breast feeding successfully.

I wish RVH would have had a lactation consultant when I had my daughter in April. I believe it would have been the difference between me being able to breastfed and not. The nurses are great- but lactation is not their specialty.

My last babe was premie so breast milk was so important for him! I was grossly engorged and he wasn't getting what he needed to grow and be healthy. Thank god for my midwife who sat and helped me get a good latch, it truly made all the difference in the world. With a lactation consultant, every new mom could have this help!

As a birthing unit nurse at RvH I see the huge need for my patients and their families. As a mom, I was also in need of lactation help but had trouble finding resources.

I am a local Doula- and I feel it is important that all women have access to an LC IN HOSPITAL, sometimes the proper support is what makes or breaks a breastfeeding relationship. Please bring LC's BACK!!!
