I echo Meredith Farkas' in that we often expect people do this kind of work for free. I support this petition and believe Marci Ramiro-Jenkins should be financially supported for their work.

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color deserve opportunities and support that do not overly burden them in the workplace. Oregon in particular suffers from a deficit of diverse voices. This extra funding is the perfect opportunity to create more diverse staffing while also financially recognizing the burden that is often placed on these populations. We need to work on our racist roots but not at the cost of depending on and speaking over actual lived experiences. I wholeheartedly support this action and urge individual libraries to set aside funds of their own to both support their existing staff and the community members that participate in leading library programs. Remember: people over books.

There's a tendency in our field to ask experts for free help rather than paying for it or doing the work ourselves, and that's especially toxic when it concerns EDI work. Asking the victims of racism to do free labor teaching perpetrators how not to be racist seems especially egregious. EDI work is essential work, critical to adequately and equitably serving our communities. Having a paid position that is focused on this work demonstrates that importance. The status quo makes EDI work look optional for libraries and abuses the time and energy of the very library workers this work should be designed to help.

We need leadership through an EDIA consulting position at the State Library of Oregon and Marci Ramiro-Jenkins well positioned in the Oregon library community through proven thought leadership, change management, and the well deserved, earned respect of her colleagues.

I fully support and applaud this proposal. Oregon Libraries will be strongest when we operationalize our values and that includes fair compensation for subject matter expertise and leadership in the evolving field of EDIA.

As an organization committed to information literacy, the State Library needs to take this step towards equity, to both change the institutionalized racism in our libraries and to share the practice of equity to all those we serve.

I can think of no better person to lead the shift of change around equity work and anti-oppression efforts in the state of Oregon than Marci. This position is so very needed for real progress to happen, and I enthusiastically support this petition.
