Openness is my most important principal but there is a strong need to provide careers for young researchers - at present they are used like plastic cups.

For Open Knowledge Austria most important is the demand for open sharing of ideas and data. We think that Open Science and Open Access contribute to a more efficient and transparent research system in Europe, and should be realized sustainably. This means having the institutional support for that already at an early career stage. We support the call to expand Open Access, Open Science and Open (Research) Data policies on a European and national level.

I firmly believe that the claims expressed in this declaration are suitable to the present needs of our underappreciated community, Also I think that this is an initiative that has to be taken in the global space since this problem is a problem across the world,

A major block in the career path is the barrier put in place by the majority of funding schemes prohibiting postdocs from competing. Eligibility to apply for grants often requires a permanent position. This perpetuates the cycle of temporary contract exploitation.
The ERC funding scheme is a formal indoctrination to the "old boys scientist club" which then entitles the hand picked individuals privileged access to a pool of future funding. Grants should be entirely idea/project focussed, not based upon on an individual's groomed scientific track record.

I fully endorse this petition as it saddens me deeply that as an early stage scientist I have little motivation to continue on in academia upon completion of my PhD. This is not at all due to a loss of interest in science (my love for the field remains strong) but due to the daunting and unstable career path which it offers.
