BPS Must Update Its Tech Policy
BPS must undertake a review of all existing technology products & policies to ensure they are safe and effective, and develop a set of guidelines and principles by which to assess the use of phones and classroom tech moving forward.
These policies must be developed with the input of parents, teachers, and students, and must be based on independent research, free from corporate influence.
Policy questions to address:
--BPS can have different policies for elementary, middle, and high schools. What are the best tech policies for different developmental stages?
--Are the educational aspects of YouTube outweighed by the distraction temptation?
--How much time should students be spending on their Chromebooks during the school day?
--How will academic integrity be assured in the age of AI?
--Should BPS become a smartphone-free district?
This petition does not answer these questions but urges BPS to address them in a timely and transparent way.
Once this petition collects 1,000 signatures it will be presented to the Birmingham School Board.
