We don't need this- it's the student's choice. If they want to pay attention, they'll put their phones away. If they don't, it's their choice because it's their grade that's at stake.

And now ladies and gentlemen, a reading from the Holy Scripture: (In short, I'd stop if I were u)
The Student Handbook- pg. 6
It is expected that students and their parents will comply with the language as well as the spirit of this Handbook,
as part and parcel of the mission and philosophy of Berkeley Preparatory School. This Student Handbook supersedes all previous Handbooks, documents, and directives where they may be in conflict. Only the
Headmaster of the School can provide the final interpretation of the contents of the Handbook. Berkeley reserves
the right to dismiss any student at any time for any reason where in its sole and exclusive discretion doing so
would serve the best interests of Berkeley, its faculty and staff, or the student body as a whole. Any oral or
written statements, representations, or promises contrary to the foregoing are hereby expressly disavowed and
should not be relied upon by any student or his or her parents.

Also, many of the teachers don't care about the new cell phone policy for what it's actual purpose is, but only require students to put their phones in the holder in fear of an administrator walking in and seeing that the phones aren't all there.

I feel that the phone policy is unnecessary. I truly believe that an environment where we are not trusted with out phones is an environment where the relationship between the student and the school is weak.

Most of the cell phone caddies are clear and in the front of the classrooms. They are not "out of sight." Furthermore, they are not "out of mind" because students have to worry about putting their cell phones in and taking their cell phones out of the caddies during each class. Also, many students forget their cell phones and interrupt classes to get their cell phone back from a caddy that they left it in during their previous class. As well as this, the cell phone policy directly implies that administration does not trust students enough to not use their cell phones during class. This policy also implies that teachers are not able to control their classes and ask a student to put their cell phone away if a student is being disruptive (which undermines the ability of the teachers, the teachers at Berkeley are awesome). Many people have issues with the cell phone policy because of this. Finally, if Berkeley truly would like to prepare students for college, then Berkeley needs to recognize that in college, students will be able to make their own choices with their cell phones. If a student chooses to go on their cell phone during a college class, most likely they are only hurting themselves by not paying attention. By implementing the cell phone policy, Berkeley is not letting its students make their own mistakes and learn the consequences of their own actions.

The phone policy is dangerous. If there is a threat(School shooter) then we will not have access to our phones to call the police.

The policy does not train us for the real world. If there was a lot of consideration that went into the cheap shoe holders that we are forced to place our phones into, did they consider that nowhere in the real world will we find shoe holders for telephones? We will be forced to manage our own time and attention. Kids want what they can't have. A considerable fear is that the readjustment period in college and the workforce will be detrimental to our success. If cellphones are a mental burden, we must learn to carry that burden now.

Even if it isn't a trust issue, in many of my classes, the phone holders aren't "out of sight" but are in the front of the classroom for everyone to see. They even clear so everyone can see their phone. If anything, I am more distracted to my phone due to the new phone policy. My phone was "out of sight out of mind" when it was in my pocket, or better yet, in my backpack.
