Botox is not for Kids
There is currently no legal age requirements for performing cosmetic procedures on a patient. Some regulations suggest under 18s should be fully considered before treatment; essentially leaving the decision of treatment down to the practitioner.
Raising Awareness - Self-Value Beyond Beauty
In 2016, The Sun newspaper reported on their findings of a study to see just how 'considered' these under 18s were when visiting the clinics to undergo non-surgical procedures. 15 year old model Ella was sent around 15 practices requesting different aesthetic enhancements such as lip filler and cheek filler. Six of these practitioners throughout the England agreed to book Ella in to have the procedure done without the request of parental consent. Suggesting that regulatory bodies are not doing enough to protect these extremely young and volatile young teens.
The findings, reportedly shocked MPS, Medical Experts, Ministers, Child Charities, The General Public and The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) who deemed this as completely 'unethical'...
Yet, no law has been introduced?
No regulatory body that sets out to address this issue of age directly?
It appears, the issue is acknowledged but not sought after. The procedures are not invasive but the outcomes are detrimental and to administer such changes that undoubtedly are likely to effect a CHILDS self esteem, confidence to exert their vulnerability is extremely irresponsible and more importantly what is it teaching the children of today? that their value of self worth is a reflection of the way that they look?
The increase of social media and networking creates a juxtaposition in regards to the issue at hand. It informs and influences this young era of digital users; increase trends like facial aesitics but it also can work as a mediating platform for us to acknowledge the issue at hand and provides us a way to stand together and protect the youth of today from this volatile market.
