The recent report from the Worker Rights Consortium shows
that factories producing collegiate apparel in Bangladesh are still incredibly
unsafe, and brands producing in these factories continue to hide this from
independent inspectors. We hope you will agree that the mounting evidence about
the dangers in factories making our school apparel warrants immediate action.
Fortunately, there are clear steps we can take to prevent future disasters and
schools around the country are rising to the task. Recently, Duke University,
Georgetown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, the University
of Pennsylvania, New York University, Penn State University, and Temple
University have committed to requiring all university licensees to sign the
Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. We believe this is the right
step for Boston College to take.
My granddaughter Gemma made me aware of the continuing nightmarish conditions in Bangladesh.
