Pleasantville Detective Sgt. Stephen Bonura was initially suspended with pay after he publicly complained that plea-bargaining by the Westchester District Attorney's Office had allowed a career criminal to elude longer jail stays. This felon used this to his advantage and was able to commit still more crimes. Sgt Bonura expressed his opinion and those of many other police officers and crime victims, who are frustrated by a criminal justice system sometimes that coddles criminals. Here is one link on this incident, reported by local newspaper: http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/articleAID=2008810240342 This past Monday night, all four trustees and the mayor also approved a resolution docking Detective Sgt. Stephen Bonura's pay, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing that could result in his being fired. As a result of this, 60 charges have now been brought up against this officer for speaking out about the plea bargain deals granted to this ONE suspect. We ask that Sgt. Bonura not be terminated and be resinstated back to his position with pay, as he only expressed the frustration of having to arrest this person to only find him back on the street, within a short time, committing more crimes. This officer has dedicated his life to the village, its residents, the department and has a family to support and we all need to stand behind him and support him.
