Dear Deans Kemper and Speicher,

We’re writing to you to express our concerns about the amount of board study preparation time we will have after completing our second year. We understand that scheduling is a complex and somewhat inflexible task. A significant concern among our class is for those students who are taking the USMLE as well as the COMLEX exam, and the shortened time they will have to study for the USMLE specifically.

We truly appreciate your working with our class representatives, and wanted to let you know directly that we care about this issue.

Thank you for your time and dedication to our class.

Respectfully,

AZCOM Class Of 2019

Updates

May 7, 2016

I have completed the formal request for a sit down with the administration to discuss the current board study schedule. Our class representatives are now gathering specific data points regarding the dual examination workload to present as evidence during that meeting.

The current schedule is really stressful. Taking both boards in such a short window is basically impossible if we want to actually pass. Please reconsider.

Just trying to make sure our class gets a fair shot at residency. We really need those extra weeks.

Found this while searching board study time at AZCOM. Seems concerning. What's going on?

I would suggest to go back to school two weeks earlier if we can't resolve the issue to have 6 weeks rather than 4.

I believe that national exams like the COMLEX and USMLE that will dictate the student's direction in life are of primary importance and should supersede all other matters. The ability of the students to get into good residencies is not only a testament to their hard work, but to the school's as well.

More than 50 students that I have talked to (who are now studying for the boards or who has already taken both USMLE and COMLEX) have told me that the number of weeks of dedicated study time will directly reflect on the score because the more review questions a student does, the higher score the student can get assuming the student has learned everything during their coursework. 3.5 weeks instead of 6 weeks will decrease the number of questions we can practice by 2500 questions assuming we can do 1000 questions per week (according to current MS2's). At first, I thought I should just suck it up and start studying early but every upper classmen that I have talked to said starting 1 month early and having two more weeks of dedicated study time after the course is over are completely different story. I just really hope that some kind of change will be made to the schedule and that everyone is fully aware of how bad the current situation is.
