In 2004 Alberta was debt free. "Today I'm very, very proud to announce that Alberta has slain its debt," Premier Ralph Klein said on Monday in Calgary. (CBC News, "Alberta Declares Itself Debt-Free", 2004). Albertans sacrificed through cut backs to eliminate the $22.7 billion dollar deficit ($8,400 for every man women and child) run by the disastrous policies of Peter Lougheed and Don Getty. Legislation was put into place to ensure that "Never again will this government or the people of this province have to set aside another tax dollar on debt," Klein said. Instead by 2010 through the policies of Alison Redford and the PC Alberta Association the current government as of December 2010 had run a record $4.7 billion dollar deficit while continuing to increase spending in blatant disregard of the Fiscal Responsibility Act. Again they ask Albertans to sacrifice their future health, education and infrastructure payments to pay the interest for their so easily incurred debt. Worse Alison Redford has committed even more funds to non-essential programs such as government interference in projects in competition with the private sector with no rate of return (public upgraders) and interference in not-for-profit organizations. All of this is occurring during a time when jurisdictions assuming debt are being punished severely in terms of quality of life. In the interest of the next generation of Alberta not having to again set aside another dollar for debt the undersigned demand: 1) The reinstitution of the Fiscal Responsibility Act with budget adjustments to b e made over the next year (2012). OR 2) Alison Redford and the Alberta PC Party say they will pay back the debt when "times are good" (even though salaries and service costs increase when "times are good"). Despite their lack of economic understanding the undersigned are willing to give the PC Alberta Association the benefit of the doubt. Indeed if their policies are effective "good times" should come within the next four years. As such the PC Alberta Association and the party MLAs and leader should agree to personally finance the debt they leave behind after five years (January 2015) that they were so willing to carelessly charge to the men, women and children of Alberta. If you have a good fiscal plan you have nothing to worry about so please put your money where your mouth is – after all you had no problem doing it with our money.
