- Makeup waste in big corporations such as Ulta Beauty and Sephora has gotten out of hand. Previously, I was an Ulta Beauty employee and I witnessed this waste firsthand. At the end of the night, we would sort and throw away damaged products that were either returned or found used on the sales floor. Over my course of time working there, I saw thousands of viable products get destroyed and tossed away. This practice is extremely wasteful considering products such as hairspray or foundation could be sold for a discounted price, as the majority of them were only used once and experienced no other contamination. only being used just once and no other contamination rather than dumped in the trash. Ulta Beauty is a wasteful corpor and it shouldn’t be.
A recent case against the beauty company Ulta cost a total of 800,000 dollars in settlements due to improper use of disposing of hazardous waste material, like nail polish, fragrances. This falls under failing to discuss how to handle these products and the training of employees.
According to the social justice platform TRVST, Beauty packaging including plastic, glass, metals, etc amounts too 120 billion units of trash each year that has been recycled incorrectly and therefore filling up the landfills.
These facts bothered me as a previous employee so I am calling on the corporation to reduce their waste and sell returned products that have been sanitized at a discounted rate.
