The state has officially reversed the cuts to Berwind Lake and our park will remain fully operational. Growing up near these waters I never thought we could save the pool and grounds from being shut down, but your support truly changed the outcome. We have a massive victory today and …

Petition to The Governor of West Virginia, Legislature of the State of West Virginia, and the Department of Natural Resources

Subject Matter: Recent changes to the activities that will be available at Berwind Lake as well as reduction in staff.

Statement of Subject Matter and What is Requested: A few McDowell County residents learned on Monday, January 4, 2016 that on Saturday, January 9, 2016 Berwind Lake was being switched to Wildlife Management section of Department of Natural Resources due to budget cuts. Said cuts will result in no park superintendent; no pool; no shelter/pavilion rentals; possibly no campgrounds; maybe only one staff to maintain the grounds.

We, the petitioners, hereby ask that Berwind Lake receive enough funding to maintain a park superintendent, the pool, shelter rentals, and campgrounds. This small, yet most significant resource, is the only recreation facility in Big Creek District except for a small community park that offers playground equipment and a basketball court.

Furthermore, we respectfully request that any future proposed cuts be made public so that the citizens and local government can perhaps have input to where/how these budget cuts be made. Given time, the local citizenry could hopefully locate private and/or corporate donors to assist in maintaining the Lake and its activities.

Signatories: Each person signing this petition is at least 18 years of age.

Seeing this kind of energy for Berwind Lake leaves me honestly stunned. This place is the heart of our community and knowing so many people feel just as strongly as I do is deeply moving.

I keep thinking about the families who have visited this lake for generations and now face the loss of our only real community space. We are working behind the scenes to get a meeting with the officials who pushed these cuts through without any transparency.

Berwind Lake serves the youth of the Big Creek district and general public of McDowell County. It is a beautiful area. We ask for enough funding to maintain a park superintendent, the pool, shelter rentals and campground. Maybe tie in into ATV trails.

I'm raising five grandchildren ,my friends and I depend on the Berwind lake for swimming, family picnics, fishing, there's no where else to go and besides that I was married there in 1977.A very special and needed place for our community,

This is the only spot that so many of those of us that have moved away can come back to have family get togethers. Not being able to depend on the availability of the shelter is not acceptable when trying to plan and coordinate 75 plus people.

The southern part of our beautiful state has suffered enough. We need to rebuild not take from these people. Please fix this problem. Berwind lake needs funded to keep hope and youth in this area. We need your leadership to fix this problem. Thankyou

I think this is a crazy idea taking the pool and camping areas!!! Gives the younger generation another excuse to be on the streets as if this place ain't dead enough nothing to do around here and now this just puts icing on the cake!!!

Please keep our pool and picnic tables open. We as a family have had birthday parties and family gatherings at Berwind Lake for the past 23 years, we would love to be able to continue this tradition with our future generations. Thank you.

Make all attempts to keep the lake functions as they were prior to the recent change. We like to return to McDowell County for vacations and the Lake was a favourite place to visit.
