I know the rest of the squadron were displeased with Pappy for signing on with that NBC series but he has been my idol since I was 12. Though he was a flawed person, to be sure, adulthood has only served to make me appreciate his strengths and perseverance.

These brave men deserve accomadation to honor them and to validate their sacrifice, service, and bravery to our country and to honor their surviving family members who are also always effected by their loved one's service

Quit talking & get to work. I look forward to reading new and more accurate documentation of the events that VMA 214 effected during WWII. You have a big challenge ahead of you.

Peter Vergados excuse my intrusion into your discussion but I need to make a comment about your post. As was said by another person Boyington may have been somewhat rough around the edges but with all the WWII research I have done and particularly Corsair pilots and squadrons I have only found one pilot that said they would not be happy with Pappy as their wing man. Yes he loved to drink and rabble rouse but when it came to his flying he was sober and on his game. My only regret was not having the opportunity to have a face to face or better yet been able to fly with him as pilot.

peter vergados I don't know if you troll for comments or not but I seriously do not think you know the actual history of the 214 because if it wasn't for greg this 214 or any discussion of it would not be here now so research before you comment stupidly

so you FREELY ADMIT you never KNEW the COLONEL, Yet you feel you have the right to JUDGE the man. Tell me, What have you done with YOUR miserable time on planet EARTH ? What accolades have you EARNED ? its a BIG man that speaks BADLY of a DEAD man. Especially one that HOLDS the MOH. We all know Pappy wasnt perfect & he freely admitted it any times. I PROMISE you this much ! when the BULLETS are flying past your EAR. & you are scared to death & PISS id running down your LEG, He would come & save you MISERABLE life !

My kids and I would love to see this story told more accurately. I will say that I did enjoy baa baa black sheep as a boy. It played a factory in me becoming a pilot!

Too bad Pappy Boyington is affiliated with this group... According to my close friends who flew with or were part of the original Flying Tigers (Of which he was a member) tell the story that Pappy was a drunkard who should have been court martialed for his antics..He gets lost and ends up with the MOH..

My grandfather was an original black sheep and is pictured above. These men were a special breed of amazing men and deserve to have their story right. Thanks.
