NYC Bike Share Implementation--Don't Forget Staten Island!
The NYC Department of Planning just completed a bike-sharing plan for NYC (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/transportation/td_bike_share.shtml). Great news, except they forgot the most bike-friendly borough in NYC--Staten Island. Four out of Five Boroughs are included in the implementation stage of the plan. Staten Island is left out. Yet, Staten Island is one of the boroughs most likely to benefit from a bike sharing program. With a dedicated bike-path already completed in the Greenbelt, and more planned for the new Fresh Kills Park, Staten Island is arguably one of the most bike-friendly boroughs in New York City. It also has a number of fabulous venues an easy bike ride from the SI Ferry and the Verrazano Bridge, many of which are difficult to reach by other forms of transportation such as bus or train. These include: the South Beach Boardwalk, Fort Wadsworth, Snug Harbor, Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, Alice Austin House, Garibaldi-Meucci Memorial Museum, the Conference House, and over 3,200 acres of park land, among others. The Staten Island Ferry brings over 65,000 passengers each day to and from Staten Island. A number of these visitors would love to explore Staten Island with the aid of a NYC bike-share bike. Join us in asking NYC to implement the bike share program including ALL FIVE Boroughs!
