We are looking for Belmont Citizens who agree with us Channing Road residents who firmly believe constructing a bike path that would run adjacent to the live commuter rail running through Belmont Center would be a terrible mistake. There are potential dangers of allowing the public more access to where high speed commuter trains routinely travel at speeds of 40-50 mph. The proposed path would be a paved path that would run from Alewife to Belmont Center right next the commuter rail line. There are many factors that have been overlooked and/or not thoroughly researched that we believe are critical to understanding our point of view. Some of these are the access road for the MBTA (Alexander Road) which is used to repair the tracks and constant maintenance currently would if the bike path is approved, would allow access across the proposed path to the tracks compromising safety of anyone traveling on the path. Who would be responsible for maintenance and safety patrol of the path; The first responders, the police and fire departments have not even been consulted at this point. Among many other issues, there could be big liability issue with the town if there was an accident with a train and biker or anyone traveling on this path if it is approved. Finally the funds for this proposed path would be coming out of various pools of taxpayers money so now is the time to be heard. Please sign this petition to put an end to this proposal and lets think of a safer place to put the bike path for our kids and families to ride their bikes and go for walks. Thank you, Bruce MacKinnon Channing Road Resident
