-An estimated 2,480,000 tons of plastic bottles and jars were disposed of in 2008. (EPA) -Along with plastic bags, plastic bottles are among the most prevalent sources of pollution found on our beaches. (Ocean Conservancy) -When plastics break down, they don't biodegrade, they photodegrade. This means the materials break down to smaller fragments. These readily absorb toxins which contaminate soil, waterways, and animals upon digestion. -A healthier, safer, and cheaper alternative to disposable, plastic water bottles are reusable BPA-free bottles filled with tap water which, in most instances, is cleaner than bottled water. -For the above reasons: We, the undersigned, object to the sale of bottled water on the Iowa State University campus. In its place we would like to see more water refilling stations and sales of reusable water bottles.
