Dear Scottish BAFTA New Talent Awards Team,

We hereby want to note how important we think bringing back the Best Director Award at your ceremony is, as we believe it will support the future of many directors, aspiring and established alike.

Accolades are very important in the industry and even with the Best Picture Award still on the list, in classical terms this is mostly seen as the Producer's achievement.

As you have many different awards that you give out, we feel that the Directors shouldn't be missed out, as they are the force that combines all the others together in unison to create the final film.

The creator of the petition knows the director Michael Ferns who last won the Best Director Award back in 2010 and that it has fared him very well, and we think more upcoming directors also deserve that opportunity, as well as it being important for the future of Scottish Film and its talent.

This is why would like to show you how many people are in support of the Best Director Award being reinstated and inquire you to consider our suggestion.

Your Sincerely.

I was thinking about how Michael Ferns started out and honestly it just keeps hitting me that we are losing so much potential talent without that specific category to aim for. People have been messaging me about their own struggles trying to get noticed in the Scottish film scene and to be real it is kind of overwhelming but also really validating to know I am not the only one obsessed with fixing this.

I really did not think this would gain this much steam but here we are and honestly it feels like people are finally waking up to the fact that directors are the glue holding these projects together. Seeing this kind of energy for the craft is genuinely wild to me because I just started this out of frustration over Michael Ferns and his legacy but now it feels like a real movement for Scottish film.

I'm a director and the exclusion and lack of recognition of this role in the awards categories is both surprising and disappointing. Please include it as the director is a vital, integral part of the creative and production process.

In keeping with industry standard, we should be celebrating each particular member. Unsure as to the logic behind this choice. Bring it back.

How bizarre to leave out the one person who pulls the whole team together. Please reinstate this award and encourage ALL new talent to take pride in their achievements.

Supporting newly graduated directors through the backing of the Scottish BAFTA institution can only help the industry grow into a better version of itself (as the recognition will help directors with funding/finance, for example, meaning crew and talent have a better chance of getting paid etc)

Aside from someone receiving an actual award, it seems a bit of an oversight to have categories for everything BUT directing. Surely directors are fairly important...?

Up and coming Directirs deserve to be recognised and encouraged as much as anyone else in the industry.

Find this exclusion pretty unusual, the award could definitely help out someone massively!

A great idea with so many new and talented directors helping to make the films that are being produced today.
