Dear Friends, As most of you know by now the recent Belmont roads override, which would have indirectly provided some limited operating funds to support the school budget gap, did not pass. I believe that there were several reasons that it did not pass; one of them being that most people care more about funding the schools than the roads and second, the $3 Million level of the override was burdensome. I am trying to garner support for a June 2006 ballot schools-specific override of $1 Million to fund the gap in the Fiscal Year 2007 schools operating budget. As a first step, I am collecting signatures of individuals who would support such an override. If you can lend your support to this effort I would greatly appreciate it. Please sign the petition and send the website link to your friends. The timeline for making the case for this override is very short - and the needs of our schools are very great! I would like to be able to show these completed petitions to the School Committee and to the Board of Selectmen in the very near future! We need to fight for our schools and this petition will help make the case to our Selectmen to put this override on the ballot in June. Thank you in advance for supporting our schools. Best, Gretchen McClain

I am Gretchen McClain - An economist, wife and mother of three, Town Meeting Member in Precinct 1, Municipal Light Advisory Board member, Girl Scout co-leader - committed to funding our town\'s schools and municipal services. My three girls are 13, 11 and 5, and next year will be in elementary, middle and high school in Belmont. For the last NINE years I have watched school funding being cut, never to have positions or textbooks or materials restored in subsequent years. This has created a downward spiral in the education budget, which is now at a tipping point. I want to send the message to our Selectmen that a large number of Belmont residents support our schools and demand to see them funded - THIS YEAR! Thank you for your support!
