Subject: Removal of Bathroom Doors Creating Health, Safety, and Privacy Concerns for Students
We, the undersigned parents and guardians, are writing to formally express our serious concerns regarding the recent removal of exterior doors from student bathrooms and the conditions that have resulted from this decision.
Public schools have a responsibility to provide students with a safe, hygienic, and respectful learning environment. Restrooms are essential facilities that students must be able to access during the school day without fear, embarrassment, or loss of privacy. Since the removal of bathroom doors, many students have reported feeling uncomfortable and unsafe using the restrooms. As a result, some students are refusing to use the bathroom during school hours and are waiting until they return home.
This behavior creates clear hygiene and health risks. Avoiding restroom use for long periods can lead to dehydration, urinary tract infections, physical discomfort, and other health concerns. Additionally, when students avoid using the restroom, they are also less likely to wash their hands regularly, increasing the spread of germs and illness throughout the school. These conditions directly interfere with students’ health and their ability to focus and learn.
The situation is further worsened by the condition of the bathroom stalls themselves. Several stalls reportedly have broken doors or faulty latches, allowing others to see inside while they are in use. The removal of exterior bathroom doors eliminates an important layer of privacy and magnifies this issue, resulting in conditions that do not meet reasonable expectations for student dignity or safety.
Parents are also deeply concerned by reports that, within days of the doors being removed, students have made inappropriate comments about entering bathrooms designated for the opposite sex. This raises serious concerns regarding supervision, harassment, and the protection of students’ personal boundaries. Students have the right to feel safe and protected from inappropriate behavior while at school.
While we understand the school may be attempting to address vandalism or misconduct, it is clear that a small number of students are responsible for damaging bathroom equipment. These individuals do not appear to be consistently or appropriately disciplined, while the broader student population experiences a loss of privacy and safe access to restroom facilities. Collective punishment of this nature is ineffective and unfair, and it does not address the root of the problem.
We believe the current bathroom conditions may conflict with basic student rights, district policies, and reasonable health and safety standards. Schools are expected to provide facilities that protect students’ privacy, promote hygiene, and ensure equal access to essential services.
We respectfully request that the school:
Reinstall exterior bathroom doors or implement an equally effective solution that restores privacy and safety
Repair or replace all broken stall doors and latches immediately
Enforce consistent and appropriate discipline for students who damage school property
Collaborate with parents and students to develop solutions that protect health, dignity, and student rights
We appreciate your attention to this matter and urge prompt action to ensure that all students can safely and comfortably meet their basic needs during the school day.
Sincerely,
Parents and Guardians of Becker High school
