For many years at Bayport Blue Point High School, both juniors and seniors enjoyed the privilege of being able to leave the school during their lunch period. This allowed them to get some fresh air and exercise,it gave them some time to relax outdoors after a stressful morning, and gave them a much greater variety of food options. It also gave business to local restaurants, generating revenue for the town. It benefited the students as well as the community.
     However, starting this school year, juniors will no longer be allowed to leave the building during lunch. The school's administration gave several reasons for this change, including an increase in the seating available in the cafeteria, as well as an increase in the quality of school lunches. While understandable that the administration wants to make good use of these changes to the cafeteria, the privilege of juniors to have open campus lunch should not be removed. The juniors have not done anything to prove that they are not worthy of this privilege, and many of them feel that their rights are being infringed upon. Many feel that they have been striped of a privilege that they have earned as upper classmen, and they feel that this is entirely unfair and unjust. We urge the administration to allow open campus lunch for juniors.
