In all probability there will be no major sports events completed this year due to the massive impact of the corona virus, not just in the UK but around the globe.

Could I ask for your support in this petition to put forward the idea that BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020 programme and staging instead, be devoted to The NHS and Key Workers in recognition of their unbelievable response, dedication and sacrifice throughout such a tumultuous and unprecedented period. Surely there cannot be any sportsman or sportswoman or their professional organisations in this country worth their salt who would baulk at the idea ? All major tournaments across every sport have either been cancelled or postponed until next year. There cannot be therefore any form of representation in a Sports Award Ceremony 2020, so let’s use that available slot to recognise our true heroes at the end of the year.

If we can muster the support of the BBC, the organisers, the sportspeople themselves, the press and the public then we can showcase to the world our amazing heroes and recognise all that they have achieved through adversity.

I write this as a member of the public who loves his sport, but who loves his nation's health and wellbeing even more.
