Dear Scottsdale City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Scottsdale, support the proposed BASIS Scottsdale campus at the southwest corner of 128th Street and Shea Boulevard. This is the perfect site to serve the next generation of BASIS Scottsdale students for the following reasons:

  1. Its ideal location along the Shea corridor means it is accessible and centrally located for the 1,000+ members of the BASIS Scottsdale community.
  2. At least two traffic engineers, including the city engineer, believe the site will function safely. Cars will not stack onto 128th St. or Shea, and the level of service at the intersection of 128th and Shea will actually improve compared to how it operates today, after BASIS completes required improvements including constructing a traffic signal.
  3. The same traffic engineers agree that neither 124th St. nor 130th St. will be negatively impacted by the new BASIS campus.
  4. The school site is 9 acres, which is far larger than most public charter schools.
  5. The vacant site allows for ground-up construction and its accompanying ability to design for optimal traffic functionality and ample queuing from day one.
  6. The traffic engineer hired by a group of neighbors to review the project asked for a queue of 2,300 linear feet. The latest site plan provides a minimum 2,800 linear feet of queuing.
  7. The site is located directly off of Shea and is not accessible from the residential neighborhood to the south.
  8. BASIS has spent three years searching for the optimal new home for BASIS Scottsdale, and they have found it in this site. A "no" vote on this site is a "no" vote to keeping BASIS in Scottsdale.
  9. Even after absorbing the significant cost of accommodating many requests from the City of Scottsdale and neighbors near the site, BASIS has remained committed to opening in this location to serve some of the more than 1,100 students on the school's waiting list.
  10. BASIS has followed all requests from the Development Review Board and has agreed to enter into a Development Agreement that requires efficient traffic flow on and around the site. But even without this measure, BASIS has serious motivation to make sure their site is safe and easy and quick to access.

Thank you for all of the time you are spending on this issue that is so important to thousands of Scottsdale constituents.
