THE FACTS - An estimated 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. - Over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps are consumed every year in the US alone (Source: EPA). - The US uses 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually at an estimated cost to retailers of $4 billion (Source: Wall Street Journal). - Over 100,000 birds, whales, seals and turtles worldwide are killed by plastic rubbish every year. - Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photo-degrade which means they break down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways eventually entering back into the food chain when animals accidentally digest these small pieces of toxic waste. - Globally we use approximately 12 million barrels of oil to produce the plastic bags that are used each year worldwide. OUR MISSION To stop the use and manufacture of plastic shopping bags nationwide across America. OBJECTIVES - To enforce the manufacture and use of biodegradable carrier bags as the only alternative. - To enforce a mandatory plastic carrier bag recycling or 'return-and-re-use' policy at every store. - To enforce a 'convenience' charge for every plastic carrier bag that a customer requires over the counter. - To encourage friends and family and everyone you know to always carry an alternative bag whenever they go shopping and to simply say 'No Thanks' EVERY TIME they are offered a plastic bag anywhere.
