As the Youth MP for Cronulla, it deeply saddens me that the beautiful beaches and landscapes of my electorate (No bias of course!) is almost always overshadowed by a series of unacceptable racist demonstrations that occurred in 2005. The worst part about this is the fact that not only is Cronulla recognised by these events on a local scale, but rather on a national basis. It’s becoming apparent that these events, along with other behaviours have created a stereotype of the typical “Shire” resident. I can concur that there are a number of people who fit this stereotype perfectly, however this small percentage of people should not be an indication of the people from the Cronulla Electorate and the Sutherland Shire as a whole. This is why I think the new show proposed by Shine Production “The Shire”, should be banned from going to air on Network 10. The show has been rumoured to be the “Jersey Shore” of Australia, and regardless of whether it reaches this level of fame, I do not want to find out the effects that this publicity could potentially have. As much as it will affect people from my electorate, there is also the possibility that it could also create an incredibly undesirable stereotype of Australians if the show reaches international success. I know it's easy to think “It’s just a TV show”, and that may well be right, but I don’t think that the show should have a chance to be aired and show its full potential of influence when the negative consequences could be seen for years.
